Financial Expert : R.K Narayan

It is the second of the collection of four wonderful novels by the author. The story is all about a man called Margayya ( it was actually a sobriquet, the original name being forgotten). The name itself means a finacial expert. He is a person who helps poor villagers and farmers o get loan from the cooperative bank and charges interest, but was forced to move away from the place by the bank's secretary as the middleman concept was illegal. He has a family comprised of his wife and son , the house reminds of the estranged relationship with his brother with whom they never talked. The man is shown to be very fond of his son Balu. The author shows how the father is slowly spoiling the child. Margayya could not continue the business because of the loss of the account books , as his son threw it in the gutter.
margayya goes out of work, and fells in the rather superstitious words by a priest to perform rituals so as to become rich soon. During this economic deprivity he meets a Dr. Pal , a sociologist who had written a manuscript on ways of keeping harmony in marital relationships. Though the author doesn't directly refer to it, but it is clearly shown that after margayya completed his rituals he was given the manuscript by Dr Pal. This is published as book by margayya and his ascendancy begins. Balu, his son also is provided the best of education but is spoiled and doesn't study and finally runs away from home amok.
margayya starts another business of lending and that was also giving him a lot of money. one day margayya and his wife receives the news of Balu's death. People's pressure force margayya to go to Madras for enquiring abt him. He finds a helpful policeman who helps to find that his son wasn't dead. The author introduces a pinch of humor by bringing a rich but mad person who considered himself a messenger of God and who posted messages of the peopl'e deaths to their homes.
The son is treated in the most regal manner after returning which further spoils him. His father marries him and gives hima separate house to live in, also gives a monthly amount to live on. Margayya found Dr.Pal (whom he never admired ) getting close to his son. So as to get him involved n some other work, asks him to persuade the traders to deposit the money and take hefty 20% interest per month from him. More and more money started pouring into his house and he almost had no time even to eat.
The insolence of the son is shown when he comes to his father and asks his share of money in the ancestral property.
Finally he got t know from his daughter in law that his son is going out to visit girls along with Dr. pal. Margayya saw both of them coming in a car the same night along with two girls. Losing control he beats Pal with fullest of strength about which Pal lodges complaint in the police station. Since Pal had a personal rapport with most of the traders, most of the people believed that margayya has gone nuts and their money is not in safe hands. People started puring in like money used to pour once and asked their deposits back. Margayya returned as much as he could and finally filed for insolvency in the court. His son's house is also attached and he comes back home along with his wife and son.
At the end of novel margayya is shown resting peacefully on a mat. he asks his son to go to the old banyan tree to do the old business again of lending money to villagers. His son was non commital to do such small job. Seeing this margayya said, "if u don want to do it , i will".
This person had a passion for his work but for his passion and lust for money he forgot where his family was. He could not talk to his wife or visit his grandson.
End is as typical as it could be like the first novel. Very life like. Life again moves on irrespective of what has happened.
